The two painters Torai Inaba and Erika Nakanishi will hold a joint exhibition at Artglorieux titled "Scroll." In consideration of the way that all of us regularly scroll through webpages and feeds on our smartphones and computers, the artists have designed this exhibition in a format that has viewers "scrolling," or moving, themselves through physical spaces as they view the art.
Nakanishi adopts plants and animals as her subjects—something quite rare these days—utilizing as her foundation ancient, traditional techniques while also incorporating subjective deformations and contemporary elements. She places great weight on spatial and perception concepts from old Japanese aesthetics as she searches out new means of expression. In contrast, Inaba tracks the ways in which the concept of "real" has changed from era to era, and strives to infuse his works with enough latitude for people to interpret them at will.
The portions of his works which remain open to free interpretation stoke the imagination, and the ways in which scenes change with physical progression, as well as the ways in which elements such as time and perspectives seem to intermingle, provide the viewer with a more expansive story for each piece. As the viewer looks through each, their perspective is opened up and connections within the story begin to form.
Both artists' stories can be scrolled through—unfurled much like a picture scroll—and each develops further with that progression. Come down and "scroll" through their works for yourself, enjoying experiences unique to each moment in the worlds which unfold before you.
