The works on display for "Japanese Modern: New Nihonga," provided by six artists, take the traditional techniques and materials of Nihonga (Japanese painting) as their foundations while integrating contemporary perceptions and mindsets as part of a search for new possibilities in the art of painting. The meaning of "Nihonga" in this context is not limited to the preservation of traditional techniques alone. It also embodies styles of thinking mediated by sympathetic responses to factors such as nature, time and existence. The artists have disassembled and reconstructed those forms based on their individual sensibilities to explore more deeply the ways in which paintings can live on in the here and now.

Artists: Torai Inaba / Miyu Kanai / Kota Suzuki / Makoto Toyama / Erika Nakanishi / Hiroto Wada
